On his right side, there are two strategies:

1) Wait til he takes a drink, then RUN for the room. He may shoot at you, but he'll forget about you the second you get out of sight.
2) Wait til he drinks and his back is turned, then WALK slowly past him to the room - he won't hear you if you walk. (This one makes more sense, but I haven't gotten him to turn his back long enough to get it to work. Other regulars at the Geek Forums have accomplished it, though.)

On the left side, wait til he turns away, then grab the gas can sitting in the back of the truck, and run back out of sight. This is much quicker and easier, believe me, since all you need to do is edge towards the open back - Meg can reach over and grab it.
